How to get CPU temp with 2.6.13.17 kernel?

Hi guys,

What do I have to do to get ACPI to track the CPU temp on a Dell motherboard?

I'm using the 2.6.17.13 kernel from Slackware extras.

I tried the initrd suggestion I found in a thread by Fluxx (I think) and it did add alot more ACPI stuff to the /proc/acpi directory but thermal-zone had no files in it.

Thanks,
Rand

i'm not sure exactly which option does it, but I have 2 dell laptops and both report temperature in /proc/acpi/

here is a snippet of my .config:

Code:

# ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) Support
CONFIG_ACPI=y
CONFIG_ACPI_SLEEP=y
CONFIG_ACPI_SLEEP_PROC_FS=y
# CONFIG_ACPI_SLEEP_PROC_SLEEP is not set
CONFIG_ACPI_AC=y
CONFIG_ACPI_BATTERY=y
CONFIG_ACPI_BUTTON=y
CONFIG_ACPI_VIDEO=m
# CONFIG_ACPI_HOTKEY is not set
CONFIG_ACPI_FAN=y
CONFIG_ACPI_DOCK=m
CONFIG_ACPI_PROCESSOR=y
CONFIG_ACPI_HOTPLUG_CPU=y
CONFIG_ACPI_THERMAL=y
# CONFIG_ACPI_ASUS is not set
# CONFIG_ACPI_IBM is not set
# CONFIG_ACPI_TOSHIBA is not set
CONFIG_ACPI_BLACKLIST_YEAR=2001
CONFIG_ACPI_DEBUG=y
CONFIG_ACPI_EC=y
CONFIG_ACPI_POWER=y
CONFIG_ACPI_SYSTEM=y
CONFIG_ACPI_CONTAINER=y
# CONFIG_ACPI_SBS is not set
CONFIG_X86_ACPI_CPUFREQ=y
CONFIG_X86_SPEEDSTEP_CENTRINO_ACPI=y

Thanks. I'm hoping to do this with kernel modules instead of recompiling. It's a regular motherboard (not laptop).

IIRC you may need lmsensor kernel module loaded?

Randux, if and when you do that without the recompile let me know, I've tried to do the same thing with the same kernel and in the end I was compiling a newer kernel.
lm_sensors wont help much. lm_sensors will start but won't show temperature because you need to compile the modules for each sensor unless you're lucky and those sensor modules are allready compiled with the kernel. Mine weren't.

Tux there was a thread where a guy name Fluxx gave the command to build the initrd. It mostly worked but I didn't get any temps. Somebody who knows ACPI can probably figure out what to change.

Dive I think this should work on a 2.6 kernel without lmsensors.

thanks guys

If I'm not wrong Thermal Zone is not compiled in to the default extra kernel on Slack 11. So I think you're gonna have to recompile it anyway.
Sorry I'm to lazy to check right now it's almoast 1.00AM here...
