how to "french" the slackware 9.0

Hello,
I want to use french language by default under slackware 9.0 .
Under slack 8.1 i have to modify /etc/profile as this
# Set default POSIX locale:
# export LC_ALL=POSIX
LC_CTYPE=ISO-8859-1
LANGUAGE=fr
LC_MESSAGES=fr
LC_ALL=fr_FR
LANG=fr
LESSCHARSET=latin1
export LC_CTYPE LANGUAGE LC_MESSAGES LC_ALL LANG LESSCHARSET
but under slack 9.0
it doesn't seem to work.
Can you explain to me the good way ?!
Thanks ...
Yan H.
