So your laptop is not connected by an RJ45-cable but by wifi to the network. As your wifi network requires a password to connect it makes sense that this password needs to be stored on your machine for automatic reconnect at boot.

The worst thing that could happen is that any user with an account on your laptop finds the password to your wifi network and then is able to connect also with other machines to that network.

When using NetworkManager, the password (for all users) is stored in a file in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/ that is only readable by root.
This is an example of how security is increased by disabling root login through SSH once a working SSH setup has been established.
