how to enable direct rendering?

just a quick one... how do you enable direct rendering in xwindows...

i have direct rednering enabled in the xorg.conf file and everything works fine... but from time to time... it automatically turns it self off... is there any way that i can re-enable direct rendering on while xwindows is in operation?

First you need to find the source of the problem, like what causes it to change. 2nd, a little more info would be gread

like video cand, kernel.

ati radeon 7500... running on the 2004 March version of DRI... but the graphics card unfortunately passed away and the whole machine has now been sent to be repaired...
