SUCCESS!!!

Patience was never a strength of mine, so I did it: I re-installed my system, and once I had LUA installed from SBo (as mentioned in your README...) the build ran fine. I am now running e1 version 0.16.999_p61423, ecore 1.0.0_p61423 etc.

Only thing not working as expected: Font size setting is ignored. I want to make the font a bit bigger, as it is hard to read on my screen. However, the setting has no visible effect, no matter what font at which size I choose. But that's a different story, and, as I said elsewhere, a much smaller problem in the very sense of the word.

EDIT: Even the font size problem is solved, now. I just had overlooked the tiny checkbox "user defined fonts" above the list of fonts. Once set, the selected font was immediately picked up by e.

In other words: Now it's perfect!

Great, glad you got it working :-) The font thing took me two tries to notice as well.
