How do I upgrade from kernel 2.6.27.7-smp to kernel 2.6.28.7-smp?

I have a working Slackware 12.2 linux box with the above mentioned kernel. However, apcid seems to not detect my laptop battery in /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state

I'm guessing it's a kernel related issue, so I figure I might as well try a different kernel. Now, how would I go about upgrading to the above mentioned kernel from where I am atm, which is a fully installed slackware 12.2 with kernel 2.6.27.7 box using xfce 4.4.3?

I haven't used a stock kernel for some time, but I'm pretty sure PV uses the kernel config option to have the .config file available as /proc/config.gz (available under "Kernel .config support"). You could grab the vanilla 2.6.28.7 source and use this .config to rebuild the kernel.

I was able to successfully rebuild my kernel with support for my laptop battery. So I ended up sticking with 2.6.27.7-smp. Thanks though.
