How do I make a Ramdisk?

When I use Windows XP I create a ramdisk of 64MB which I use to keep various temporary files in such as internet cache. This speeds up things and also means that the cache is automatically emptied on shutdown.

My question is: how do I create such a ramdisk in Linux (Slackware)?. I have Googled and found references to startup ramdisks but not an easy to follow guide to create the type that I require.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a suitable guide?.

Thank you.

you'll probably already have one running at /dev/shm or similar. you can see the /etc/fstab entry that creates it with the tmpfs file system. there's also the (i think) older less flexible ramfs.

I run a ramdisk in this way (two lines in /etc/fstab):

tmpfs /tmp tmpfs size=530M,nr_inodes=8M,mode=1777 0 0
tmpfs /var/tmp tmpfs size=530M,nr_inodes=8M,mode=1777 0 0

You may change the amount of RAM to your size and it should work fine.

Fluxx.
