How do I edit the Gnome applications menu
 

:confused: How can I add another program to the menu in Gnome in Slackware 9.1? It is the menu that appears when I click on the foot in the upper left hand corner. I am not sure what that menu is called but, in Windows it is the "start" menu. I have several programs that I want to add to the choices that are available. It there some text file that I can edit to add additional programs to choose from?

I recently switched from Red Hat 9 to Slackware 9.1. In Red Hat 9 I had been using the Codeweavers CrossOver Office software to run Word 97, Excel 97, Powerpoint 97, and Adobe Photoshop 7 from Linux. When I installed each of those programs from Crossover Office in Red Hat 9 each program was added to the menu. Yesterday I installed CrossOver Office 2.1.0 in Slackware 9.1 using the LokiInstaller. I installed CrossoverOffice while logged in as an ordinary user which is what the Codeweavers web site recommended. Installing Crossover Office resulted in error messages that seemed to relate to problems with the menus but other than that it works well and I was able to install Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Adobe Photoshop 7. I then had to start cxsetup and the other programs from the command line in an obscure subdirectory where I eventally found them. Those programs all run perfectly when started from the command line in Slackware 9.1 but are not listed anywhere in the menu.

I would like to add those 5 programs to the menu so that I will not need to start them from the command line. There are also several Linux programs that I would like to added to the menu. When I installed Ximian Evolution it added itself to that menu automatically. Most other linux programs did not add themselves to the menu. How can I edit the applications menu in Gnome? An alternative would be to create icons for them on the desktop or on a panel to start them a launcher but I would prefer to not do that because I only want to do that with a few of my favorite programs. I do not want to clutter up my Gnome desktop with icons for Windows programs.

I don't think you can edit the actual main menu, but if you right click on any of the actual programs in the sub menu that you want to add to you get another menu of actions to choose from. At the bottom should be the option "Entire Menu>" if you go down to that another menu should open which has the option "Add new item to this menu" which works for me.

Thanks, that was easy, it worked! I put those programs on a sub-menu and am able to start them from there.

You can add items to the main menu if you click on
the "Start Here" icon.

You can then click on the applications icon, after
right click on the page and select the action you
want. Eg: Create Launcher

Run gnome as root, open nautilus and type the magic location
applications-all-users:///

Then you'll be able to edit the main-menu.
