How do I change from Fluxbox to Gnome?

I liked fluxbox, but I found VMWare kept positioning itself partially off my screen, so I tried KDE and GNOME. I tested these by logging in as root and running kdm and gdm from the command line. Both handled VMWare's windows properly, except KDE messed up my sound in all my apps (including VMWare). So I decided to use GNOME.

I changed my normal user's .xinitrc from "exec fluxbox" to "exec gdm", but now it complains that "only root wants to run gdm". Same problem with kdm. How do I make it so that when I run "startx" as a normal user, I get the gdm screen? (or better yet, just go straight in to GNOME)

I didn't want to run DropLine just yet, just the regular GNOME.

thx

as root run the xwmsetup command. It sets the default X gui for the system.
in the user's home directory rename the .xinitrc file

I can't find xwmsetup...

Not even on Google

I also tried 'whereis xwmsetup' and 'locate xwmsetup'.

Is that a mispelling?

xwmconfig did the trick!

I ran it from /usr/X11R6/bin/xwnconfig

It did not set it globally, so I just ran it as root then ran it again as my normal account.

Thanks!
