how can I setup my usb printer?

I can't seem to set up my Epson Stylus C40UX printer on Slackware 9. Just installed slackware about 1 week ago (my first linux OS) Finally got online today!

Any suggestions?

copied from linuxprinting.org/howto/vendores.html:

Code:
9.7. Slackware
Slackware ships with APS Filter. The apsfilter SETUP script is installed as the command `apsfilterconfig'. You should be able to get a reasonable setup by simply running that.

It's possible that Slackware includes other systems as well; I don't have it here to play with.

I had some trouble getting my USB printer to work until Slack 9. As long as your USB is working, the easiest method I found was to install CUPS. You can download CUPS from the /extra folder on any slackware mirror, then just use installpkg CUPS[version].tgz . Make sure that your /etc/rc.d/rc.cups has execute permissions, then run it by typing /etc/rc.d/rc.cups and you should get a message about the CUPS server running. Now if you fire up your browser, and enter an address of http://localhost:631 you should see the CUPS admin page where you can set up your printer. Hope this helps.

Couldn't get cups to start initially. Tried various things for about 1/2 hour...then just rebooted and cups was running. Started the printer manager...it recognized my printer! After days of fiddling with everything ,trying to get it to work...sweet. Thank you reclusivemonkey. I now have no reason to boot up Win XP! You da man! (or should I say monkey)

Thanks again.

Happy to help :-) After you installed, the reason CUPS wasn't working straight away was that you have to start the cups daemon, which is the program that monitors for any printing requests and then sends them to the printer. Slackware looks for the cups startup script which is in /etc/rc.d, but if it can't find it, will start the lpr printing daemon. When you install cups, the script is written to /etc/rc.d/rc.cups, but not started. So rather than reboot (this is Slackware remember ;-) ), you can just start the cups daemon by referring to the startup script:-

/etc/rc.d/rc.cups start (the 'start' may not be necessary, I'm not sat in front of my box at the moment!)

If you look in /etc/rc.d/rc.M you should be able to find where your cups daemon is referred to. If not, type:-

grep -B 5 cups /etc/rc.d/rc.M

And this should show you. Keep on Slackin' brother!
