How can I get logged into Gnome desktop

I have installed the gnome desktop, but I cannot boot into it can anyone tell me how I could verify that all the files for gnome have actually been installed. The only desktop that I canactually get into is the Tab window manger. My version of slackware is 9.1. I would really appreciate help with this issue.

Do you boot to a command line (runlevel 3) or to the graphical login screen (runlevel 4)?

Try this:

$ rm ~/.xsession ~/.xinitrc
$ xwmconfig
[ a menu will pop up, select the X environment you want; in this case, select GNOME]
$ startx

go to /etc/X11/xinit and copy xinitrc.gnome to $HOME/.xinitrc or else link it to xinitrc in that directory i personally prefer to copy it to my home directory

Install GDM, the gnome display manager, to let you log into gnome. Or

X :0 && export DISPLAY=:0 && gnome-session
