hotplug at boot produce a freeze
 

Aloha!

3 of 5 boot attempts (native 10.2) fail during the hotplug event.
The cursor blinks 2-3 times and then...total freeze.

Has anyone a usefull procedure to determine the causer so I can ban him into the blacklist?

which kernel did you use and please other information, such as your specs (might be usefull in some case)

Kernel 2.4.31 ; PIII 466Mhz ; GA-6BA Board (USB activated, but no Device) ; Savage3D 32MB AGP ; 756MB SDRAM 100Mhz ; AVM ISDN PCI ; PS/2 Input Devices

I'm having the same issue 2. I've just installed swaret & completed an update, rebooted & it gets to hotplug & sits there.

@punksoul257: if you are using Swaret, you should look at the changelog first if your are using -current for your swaret configuration, since some times, it will broke your system and need to adjust it manually. That's why i prefer to download the packages manually and read the changelog first before i start upgrading packages. I think it's related to udev or module-init-tools which need some adjustments. Please read the -current changelog

@Orangutanklaus : try disabling your USB Devices in your BIOS.

memory serves I had the same issue with hotplug + IPW2200 drivers. I cant remember the proper fix. I disable loading of IPW2200 module and all worked. I think this was covered really well over at the dropline gnome forums. Might want to search over there and see if it helps.

I had that idea last Night too at work. :D
I will try it, but this seem's not to be the most elegant method, in my eye's.

I heard about a trace mode, where you have to acknowledge each step during the hotplug procedure. Any thought's about this?

i don't know about this method so far, but it is a good idea if we can find out what module is the troublemaker for hotplug :D

I think i found my culprit (sp??)

I disconnected my Linksys WUSB54GS usb wifi adaptor & it booted up fine.

wifi and 2.4 kernel don't mix well.
Why are you using 2.4.31, even 2.4.32 is 6 months old now?

Yeppi! My Board has neither a BIOS option, nor any jumper's to deactivate the USB controller. Hmpf..

Don't worry, i've updated to 2.6.13 :)which is a little more up to date :)

I checked the BIOS again and found an option called "Assign IRQ for USB".
I disabled it and made a reboot. Definitly the PC started well to the ptompt.

"OK, maybe that's it" I thought.

Next Day the old hotplug freeze visited me again, and again, and again, ...
No chance to pass the hotplug event during booting. (I guess I tested it 10x)

So I enabled the IRQ assignment for USB again and...welcome prompt!

Next step for me is to prepare the blacklist.

I have seen freezes with the wusb54gs as well.
But it can be made to work (kernel >= 2.6.8 series.
ndiswrapper I used was 1.14
I have put the details in the HCL
