home isp speed
 

I want to use Slack 10.1 as a home isp service for dial-ins. My home Slack pc has a 56k dial-up modem and an ethernet card for DSL. If the pc I call my house also is using a 56k modem, would the connection speed be around 53k? Also, could I use a dial up modem to connect to my home pc and start an ssh session?

I got this idea from a book I'm reading called "Linux Toys". It says that the fastest speed I can get out of my own mini ISP is 33.6K. That doesn't sound right if both modems are 56K.

Also, it talks about using mgetty on your home based mini ISP to login. I'm wondering if once I'm logged in, I can start a terminal session on my home pc?

Download speed is 53k (+3k for the Emergency Broadcast System), but the FCC regulates that the maximum speed *you* can transmit is 33.6k. Even though you've got 56k modems at both ends of the line, you won't see higher than 33.6 with consumer-grade hardware, and more realistically you're going to see around 22-28kbit.

As for whether you can start a terminal session, depends... X terminal, no way. Not enough bandwidth unless that's all you intend to do, and I would seriously look into something like NG. An SSH session, however, is no problem. I've done that through a 1200baud connection, and I'm sure there's people who've done it through slower.
