Question hmm usb hd not recognized. . .

Not 100% sure, but I think all USB storage devices are assigned a SCSI device. So maybe something like this would do the trick:

# mke2fs /dev/sda1
# mkdir /mnt/usb-hdd
# mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb-hdd

Assuming you have no other SCSI harddrives and the drive has not yet been formatted, of course.

after plugging in the hdd run dmesg and tell us what the last few lines say
