Help with HP printer

I just got a Hp Deskjet D1660 printer, works perfect in Vista (So I know it's not the hardware).

lsusb shows:
Code:
bash-3.1# lsusb
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 046e:5542 Behavior Tech. Computer Corp.
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 03f0:7f11 Hewlett-Packard
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
bash-3.1#
So it shows Buss 001 Dev 006 as the printer.

When I run hp-setup, it can't 'find it'

(Edit: Even when using advanced discovery, and telling it EXACTLY where it is)

Ideas?

According to HP, the printer IS supported in version 3.9.8 of hplip. If the installed version (3.9.4b)needs to be updated, how do I do this? All HP has is a 'run' file that fails MISERABLY with 500,000 missing dependencies. (OK, maybe not 500,00..Probably closer to 5-6 million...lol)

I'm d/l'ng the source tarball for 3.9.8 at the moment, and modified the slackbuild for this version. What else needs to be done EXCEPT editing the version? (From 3.9.4b to 3.9.8)

I ran into a similar problem when I got a new HP Officejet Pro 8500. I modified the Slackbuild script for hplip to accept the new version number and then used that to create a new hplip package. If I remember right, I also had to upgrade CUPS and I did that the same way.

Oh yeah, you also may have to install cupsddk. I did it on Slackware 12.2 by grabbing the source and slackbuild from Slackware 13 and then modifying the slackbuild so it build a tgz package. I ran into all sorts of trouble with a newer hplip until cupsddk was installed.

Solved.

Edited the slackbuild script for 3.9.8, and commented out the patch for the error. It made the pkg, I removed the old pkg w/pkgtool, and installed the new one.

Not only did the printer WORK, hp-setup allows wireless devices now, too..
