help with graphics hardware acceleration...

ATI Radeon 9200SE did have hardware acceleration and then suddenly it wasn't there anymore...

i cant be exactly 100% sure but i did notice that i didnt have hardware acceleration after trying the mesa libraries from CVS... however i did remove them completely later...

but since noticing that hardware acceleration wasn't working i've re-compiled the kernel with and without the radeon driver... not compiling the the XFREE 4.1 within the kernel as a module or built in...

even tried the ati drivers with no luck...

is there a couple of files or just one single file that is responsible for enabling hardware acceleration under linux...

kernel version 2.4.29... latest ATI drivers downloaded today... right now running kernel 2.4.30...

thanks in advance...

roninja 04-04-2005 07:18 PM

Yourve got 2 screen sections there try commenting out the top one it. I would assume xorg loads the first one therefore its loading your video card config without hardware acceleration turned on.

marsques 04-05-2005 07:38 AM

i checked the xorg.conf files the default one, the one for the radeon and the fglrx (ATI Proprietary driver) and in all three the screen is known as "Screen 1" this was the same xorg.conf file that hardware acceleration was working before under...

egag 04-05-2005 07:56 AM

i remember , after trying the fglrx-driver ( that didn't work ), my 9200se wouldn't use graph. acceleration anymore.
i solved it by re-installing xorg.

just logout to the textscreen, remove all xorg-packages and reinstall them from the cd.

i think some link wasn't properly set back when uninstalling fglrx, but i couldn.t find the error.
reinstalling X worked.

marsques 04-05-2005 08:56 AM

thanks egag... tried your suggestion removed x11-6.8.2 and the x11-devel packages and reinstalled them... but no luck...

egag 04-05-2005 09:11 AM

hmm.... i have this in my xorg.conf :
----------
Section "Device"
Identifier "card"
Driver "radeon"
ChipId 0x5964
Option "Overlay"
Option "EnablePageFlip" "on"
EndSection
-------------

did you edit it back, or do you still ( try to ) use the fglrx driver ?

egag

marsques 04-05-2005 09:14 AM

what is the mesa version in your $glxinfo output?

take a look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
that must give a clue....

and then it loads the drivers for the mouse...

however looks like direct rendering was enabled... but not in the glxinfo output... i did also run glxgears which when direct rendering was there it ran at aroud 1000 fps but now only runs at 290fps...

by the way your glxinfo out put differs to mine...

OpenGL vendor string: Brian Paul
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa X11
OpenGL version string: 1.5 Mesa 6.2.1

while your vendor is Tungstan Graphics... mine is Brian Paul!

egag 04-05-2005 11:11 AM

yip, it sais " direct rendering enabled " ?

but what libglx do you have ?

i have :
----
root@Slack21:/home/egag# ls -l /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx*
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 487796 2005-02-14 07:07 /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.a

marsques 04-05-2005 02:42 PM

r--r--r-- 1 root root 487796 2005-04-05 20:34 libglx.a

same as yours...

maybe my issue is as in post 9, where there seems to be a problem with reserving memory...

egag 04-05-2005 02:51 PM

well...i guess there's the error. but what causes it ?

just to be sure: you also have this section in the xorg.conf :
-----
Section "DRI"

EndSection
-----

( i think you already have that. )

egag

marsques 04-05-2005 03:19 PM

thanks for all your input egag... solved the problem... downloaded the latest dri r200 and common from dri.sf.net and acceleration is back...

and its even better than before glxgears is giving around 1350fps...
