Help with cups and USB issues.

1) Usb: I am running slack10, I want to know where is each device, I have a usb hub, TT3 Palm, Lpt-2-USB adapter, COM-2-USB adapter, y cell phone(motorola c350). I went to control center, and everything appears in the usb section, so i was happy up to then. The I went to Kpilot, and i didnt know where is the palm. As default it shows /dev/pilot.... but the palm inst there, y did a dmseg and could find nothing, it saw i was connected and all that but didnt see that palm is on ttyUSB0 for example.. the same happened with Kandy (cell phone program)
Some help!!! pleaseee!

2) CUPS: still on Slack10, I own a HP laserjet IIIP. I go on KDE to the printer configuration icon, i add the printer in /dev/lpt0 .......... and nothing, i print and print and nothing. then I tried to use the LPT2USB adaptor and i had the same issue as i poster up. If anyone can give me a hand... it would be nice.
Alek

Try configuring your printer using cups (http://localhost:631). Also usb printers are usually located on /dev/usbx and not /dev/lptx.

hello, i have a hp 5650 [usb too] and its located in /dev/usb/lp0 ... perhaps you should go to www.linuxprinting.org ... there you can read step-by-step instructions on how to set up your printer ...

reddazz : as i write i am triyng that thanks for the tip. I hope it works, keep suscribed so i can tell if it worked or not.
Cdzin : hpIIIp is no a USB printer, I am using an adapter... that on dmesg shows up and seems to work. Anyway first i'll try to make it work under lpt.
Thanks both.
about usb issues nothing to tell me?

Hola alek (Hi alek), what do you mean when you said you're using a adapter? Does the printer uses usb or parallel port?

If you use the parallel port (I've never used usb) you've to uncomment the lines on /etc/rc.d/rc.modules that loads the parallel port modules.

Any luck resolving your problem? If you are configuring your printer using CUPS, you need to select the device path as /dev/usb/lpx (where x is the usb device number, eg on my system it's /dev/usb/lp0). Once thats done, you need to select the right printer model and driver, which is usually the gimp-print driver. If you select the wrong driver, the printer may not print at all even though it will show up as installed. Another thing sometimes USB hubs can cause problems so if all fails try configuring your printer by connecting it directly to the USB ports and see if it makes a difference.

Reddazz : I can connect the printer by 2 ways, lpt (the printer is lpt) or using a usb adaptor, on the dmseg the adaptor is detected, but I don know where is the path of each usb connected, do you get what I'm trying to ask here.
For example i connect my Tungsten t3 palm to the pc (it is usb), whats the path on that device?
And about the driver, my printer is HpIIIp, the drivers that appear are hpIII or the general laserjet driver. I used both, and tried to configure the hpiii using the lpt cable and the adaptor and did not work at all.
i am pretty frustrated. Yesterday I needed desperatly to print some thing, and I connected a Lexmark Z42 usb printer, and worked perfect. But i need the laserjet working!
thanks to all Reddazz

I'm sorry alek66 but i don't have any usb device to try what you're trying to achieve. I would suggest you to try using the parallel port, i've never had troubles configuring printers to use it.

i have simmilar problem. i followed
gbonvehi instruction to edit rc.modules. it works and i was able to print. But i have now another problem. i have two ehternet cards, before i edit modules.conf it was working but after the editing and restarting the computer eth0 doesnt work anymore. now i dont know what to do next. :(

alek66 02-03-2005 09:08 AM

I could configure the hp laser printer, when i was configuring it using KDE as you go with the configuration it asks on which port it is. I simply wrote the path to the port, instead of selectin the parallel port icon i was presented, i wrote the path /dev/lpt0 and it worked, although when i wrote the path an error prompt said that it didn't existed, anyway the printer is now working under LPT. I would like to get more info on usb if possible.
Thanks all
alek
