Thanks teerl and slack-in-the-box. I am also interested in reports about systems including an ESP (EFI system partition) with LUKS + LVM.

Sure thing. I remembered my laptop is UEFI so I performed a reinstall.
LVM behind LUKS running -current. Using Grub2 for its cryptodisk functionality.

Similar to @Bertical, including Efi and LVM/LUKS but only for home/data partitions so that in the case of some booting or password problems (experienced when beginning with the LUKS/LVM stuff) the system still comes up (and one can do something) even though any real work won't be possible. Booting with elilo/refind.
