help running X

hi, i'm new to slackware and i can't get x working, when i execute startx, it get an error saying that my mouse (/dev/mouse) couldn't be found,

p.s
i get this error using the xorg.config-vesa

after i ran xorgsetup (as suggested in the slackbook), my monitor

philips 170c lcd couldn't display the resolution, thats strange because i set the
horizonal and vertical refresh rates correctly (i looked into the user guide that
came with my monitor)

guys, please help me with the mouse, it's a microsoft mouse connected through usb,

and my monitors native resolution is 1240x1024 at 60Khz

thanks in advance,
erik!

Have you tried looking for other paths for your mouse, like /dev/input/mice or /dev/psaux?

thanks for the speedy replay!

i've got my x running!
i've fixed the monitor issues! (just had to specify a hard value.. not a x-x value)

i've changed the device to
/dev/psaux -->>> not working either...

this is a regular microsoft usb mouse...

for some reason /dev/input/mice got hanged my computer...

That's really odd. What happens when it "hangs"? Does pressing Caps Lock or Num Lock change the keyboard lights? Maybe it doesn't like the MS mouse (jk on that)

no, pressing doesn't change the keyboard light...

dunno what to do really...
i'm sure it's the mouse, because if i set it to /dev/psaux
x works but without the mouse...

Can you try a different mouse? Or make sure you are running the latest kernel?

new prob!

i've installed the new kernel and my computer hangs at:

nvidiafb:unable to detect display type...
...using default of CRT
nvidiafb: unable to detect which CRTCNumber
...defaulting to CRTCFNumber 0

and thats is... i can't login... when i press num lock it lights on my keyboard...

hmmmm.... i use lilo... is there an option you can give lilo at boot time, that will cause it not to use the framebuffer? or do you have any other suggestions????????

p.s
when it types those lines and hangs, i don't think it uses the framebuffer... (there is no penguin)

If you pass "vga=normal" to the kernel, that should disable the fbcon (frame buffer console).
