Help please!!! Pkginstall
New to Slackware,in fact Linux in general, and just out of interest I d/loaded kde3.5, from kde.org, did the md5 biz, all ok.
First have I mucked up by burning the pkg contents to cd without each one un-packed first (still in .tgz format) read file just stated use cmd "installpkg name_of_file.tgz" Error is "cannot install name_of_file.tgz: package does not end in .tgz" How do I get cmd line to read cdrom as current directory, tried all ways I can think of. Btw Cdrom is mounted. Some pointing in the right direction would be much appreciated. I am just tinkering at mo to pick up on commands etc |
Am I getting you wrong or did you indeed type literally:
installpkg name_of_file.tgz That is not a package name but an example line with the actual name and path to be substituted for: name_of_file.tgz path meaning: where on your cd (i.e. /mnt/cdrom/bla-bla..) actual name: you get it... |
download from Slackware's mirror instead. It's already in binary format, so you only need to upgradepkg *.tgz and it will be installed in your system. You can read my short writings at http://www.informatix.or.id/willy/up...-slackware.php

And make sure that the name of the package and path includes no spaces -- or give it to installpkg in double quotes.

jomen. Yes you did get me wrong.
I was typing /dev/cdrom/package_name.tgz. but no joy. Got it now. Thanx all |
If you coped with this problem, it would be good for others if you share your solution.
If not, try copying it to your root partition and see if it helps. |
so I did not get you wrong - not completely...
package_name.tgz is to be substituted for the real name...and you don't go through the device-file but through the mount-point ...nevermind |
My apologies Jomen. I realised my mistake was /dev/cdrom and should have been /mnt/cdrom. Sorry for the late apology. Thanks
