Help please .. kernel recompilation ..

Okey .. a small problem ...
so ...
1. I installed slackware 10.2 on my system , with 3.5 GB DDR RAM and SATA hard drive , i booted with kernel sata.i

2. Installed succesfull , but needed to recompile the kernel because HIGH_MEM wasn`t enabled and slack didn`t see all the memory

3. When i boot with the new kernel i get this error:

VFS: Cannot open root device "081"
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:01

So ... when recompiling kernel just switched on HIGH_MEM to 4GB and recompiled it
and in /etc/lilo.conf current config is:

image = /boot/vmlinuz
root = /dev/sda2
label = Linux

image = /boot/vmlinuz.old
root = /dev/sda2
label = Linux.old
When i boot from vmlinuz i get the error above , when i boot from vmlinuz.old everything`s ok ( except ofcourse the memory problem (linux not seeing all 3.5 GB of ram )

So .. any help ?

Looks like you didn't include something in your new kernel.
Double check that you got in kernel:
  • SATA support
  • your root ( / ) filesystem (i.e. if it's ReiserFS, include the ReiserFS driver)
  • proper IDE drivers for your mobo/brand
  • module autoloading and unloading (only for 2.6 kernels, I believe)

Besides that, almost anything else can go in modules

If your old kernel is working alright, but you wanted to add or trim something, HIGH_MEM in this case; why don't you copy your .config file over another kernel source, configure it as your liking and compile from there.

also, I would add, if you don't mind:

#make oldconfig #before running
#make menuconfig #(or xconfig)

else it will reset your old .config to some defaults, and you'll lose all the stuff you already had working.

Skipping this step can cause many a confusing panics...
