lion... for the upgrade you don't have to remove the old packages if you use upgradepkg command or swaret, cause they will take care of everything (removing and installing the new packages at the same time = UPGRADING). Just download everything you want to update in a directory, cd that directory and type: upgradepkg *.tgz. As cb951303 said I would suggest a full upgrade to slackware-current too (meaning you should download all new packages and upgrade them, and afterwards remove the ones you don't need but just be carefull not to remove any package that will brake your system - I've done it myself few times :D).Make sure you download this packages too openldap-client-2.3.23-i486-1.tgz , acl-2.2.34-i486-1.tgz , attr-2.4.28-i486-1.tgz because KDE 3.5.2 doesn't start without them.
And for the noarch-4 issue, well noarch means No Architecture (meaning it works on any PC architecture, most commonly at docs but not only) and 4 is the build number (that means it's the 4th package from it's series you can have the same version of a package but different builds, the biggest number of build means the latest). If I was wrong with something, someone please correct me, but it shouldn't be the case. |

Did you recompiled your kernel with sound support ? And modules for your sound devices ? For example I use make xconfig (you can use make menuconfig , etc.) but I suggest you use the xconfig too and go to Sound (make sure there you have it selected as in Yes) the Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (again make sure you have it selected to Yes - when you select Yes some other options will appear) and now under Advanced Linux Sound Architecture I suggest you select as modules the following: Sequencer support , OSS Mixer API , OSS PCM (digital audio) API , Support old ALSA API. Then go to your sound card category (eg: Generic devices, ISA devices, PCI devices, USB devices, PCMCIA devices -- I have PCI devices you know what is yours) go to that category and look for your card and read well untill you get to see your card's name in some category and make that a module too. For example I choose Intel/SiS/nVidia/AMD/ALi AC97 Controller (SND_INTEL8X0) , but again you should look for your card exactly and compile your kernel again, add the new image and everything to /boot , start lilo to save the changes and reboot. Afterwards use alsaconf again and see if it finds your card.. it should if you do this correctly. Try that, but be carefull with your kernel not to screw everything up, maybe you should try this on a backup kernel first.

thank you nykey i will do that
i install open office.org but i cannot open it because i dont know icon for him too slapt-get what i do nykey |
If you installed it correctly (OpenOffice.Org) then you should have an icon for it in the K Menu (most likely in the Office section, I'm not sure cause I never used OpenOffice) but I always wanted to :D so I'll download it too and install it and if you can't find it by then I'll help you more. As for the slapt-get you should use gslapt (this is a GTK frontend for slapt-get) ... I don't know where you got your packages but better if you go to Official Site of slapt-get and gslapt Look at your left you'll see links to slapt-get and gslapt download the versions right for you and install them using: installpkg package.tgz ! Afterwards you open a Konsole and type: gslapt . you need to have X started as root to do that.

thank you nykey
nykey how i upgrade gnome (i need ftb for packege only) |
sorry about this but I never used gnome before :P .. if you have an older version of gnome already installed , maybe like you did with KDE and the rest ? find the latest gnome slackware packages and use upgradepkg gnome-etc-blah.tgz , if this is not the way maybe someone who had installed/reinstalled/upgraded gnome before might answer this for you.
