Help me edit my fstab

This is my current fstab...

/dev/hdb5 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/hdb1 / reiserfs defaults 1 1
/dev/hdb6 /usr reiserfs defaults 1 2
/dev/hdb7 /opt reiserfs defaults 1 2
/dev/hdb8 /home reiserfs defaults 1 2
/dev/hda1 /fat-c ntfs ro 1 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,user,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0

What I want to do is have both my cdroms recognized. From my dmesg I know this...
hdc: attached ide-cdrom driver.
hdc: ATAPI 48X DVD-ROM drive, 128kB Cache, UDMA(33)
Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.12
hdd: attached ide-cdrom driver.
hdd: ATAPI 52X CD-ROM CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache, UDMA(33)

When I type "mount /dev/cdrom" or "mount /mnt/cdrom" I know it mounts my DVD-ROM, not the CD-ROM/CD-R/RW

I want both drives in the fstab and the dvdrom mount command to say dvdrom, not cdrom as it does now.

Hi,

OK, what I'd do first here is to remove the symbolic link to your DVD drive (/dev/cdrom) - ie, as root -

Code:
#rm /dev/cdrom
then create two new symbolic links - /dev/dvd and /dev/cdrom, like this -

Code:
#ln -s /dev/hdc /dev/dvd
Code:
#ln -s /dev/hdd /dev/cdrom
Now check your /mnt directory and create a 'dvd' subdirectory if it isn't already there (probably won't be)

then edit your fstab to add the dvd drive (the existing cdrom entry will now take care of your cd rom) - just add the following to the end of fstab -

Code:
/dev/dvd /mnt/dvd iso9660 noauto,user,ro 0 0
And that should be it.. Make sure you check any apps that use the optical drives - eg, CD player, Xine/MPlayer, etc and correct any config parameters pointing
to CD drives, etc...

How do I check config parameters?

Hello,

You'd do that from within the application in question. Eg. in Xine, there is a means of editing its setup. Then you'd want to check /edit any lines that point to optical drives for audio CD playback; DVD playback; VCD playback, etc. You just need to make sure that the correct drives are being used - in fact, I think that the defaults are exactly what I've suggested, so you should be OK anyway.
