Help installing MPlayer Codecs

I downloaded mplayer 1.0pre5 and installed it from source. At that time I didn't have any of the codec packs, the essential codec pack, the quicktime, or win32 packs. I then tried to play a wmv and a mov file and both wouldn't work (the mov would play but the audio had a decoding error). I then downloaded the codec packs (all three of them) and extracted all of them to /usr/local/lib/codecs. I then ran the mplayer ./configure, make, make install again (I didn't uninstall the old version because I don't know how, but I figured it would just write over it). After mplayer installed I tried playing those files again and it had the same result. What must I do to get the mplayer codecs working properly??

try making the following link:

su to root
ln -s /usr/local/lib/codecs /usr/lib/win32

/usr/lib/win32 is the old standard but still seems to be nessecary

I install mine in /usr and my win32 codecs are in /usr/lib/win32. Try configuring your install like below and substitute the paths so that they correspond with the ones on your system.

./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-gui --with-win32libdir=/usr/lib/win32

You can also put them in ~/.mplayer/codecs and Mplayer will pick it up.

I see you downloaded and extracted three codec packs? Have you read the codecs faq on the mplayer homepage? It tells you exactly which codec pack you should get for your system. For linux on x86 all you need is the essential codec pack, for example.
Also, did you unarchive the codecs directly into /usr/local/lib/codecs, thus obtaining the path "/usr/local/lib/codecs/essential-20041107/"?
The way I did it was to unarchive the codecs in my homedirectory, cd into the essential-20041107 directory and execute "mv * /usr/local/lib/codecs" to mass-migrate all the codecs into the appropriate directory. I did it that way because I wasn't sure the ./configure script would recursively search the directories for codecs.
And after fixing the codec thing I'd ./configure and recompile mplayer, but maybe if your lucky it will work without going through all that again.

Alright, I did exactly what you said and Mplayer STILL will not play the audio in mov and it freezes with wmv.

Sorry I didn't mention this before, but have you tried different audio drivers? For example:
Code:
mplayer -ao alsa,oss, filename

You have seem to have issued the wrong command, using a period instead of comma's. The -ao flag is used with a comma separated list of drivers, like so:
Code:
mplayer -ao alsa,oss, IfYouWant.mov
This way first alsa is tried, then oss, then everything else. Are you certain you deleted everything in /usr/local/lib/codecs/ before moving the essential codecs there? Have you tried the "--with-codecsdir=DIR" option with ./configure, just to be sure? Have you read the documentation?
