Help! Everything seems to be compiling into kernel!

After doing a make menuconfig, make dep, make clean, I go ahead and do a make bzImage. However the process takes around 3 minutes to compile and in the end, it gives me a message saying it is too big. I'm not sure what is going on!

I'm trying to compile the 2.4.23 kernel using this .config:
Code:
 #
# Automatically generated by make menuconfig: don't edit

so how big is it?
I know it says "image is too big for standalone boot from floppy" but that is only relevant if you are in fact booting from a floppy.

I didn't even bother to check, I knew it was unecessarily big (from the amount of time it took to compile) kernels usually take me less than 10 seconds, and those were ~ 1.4 megabytes.

Check the slackware book on www.slackware.com on compiling kernels. I think it mentions another way of doing it.

It tells me to do make bzImage if zImage is too large, it doesn't mention what to do if bzImage is too large :P

Anyway, I KNOW the kernel should not even be this big. Would 'make mrproper' before all those steps have any effect on the size?

If you don't plan on booting from a floppy with this kernel then there shouldn't be any issues at all.

Just use the kernel.

What is the actual output at the end of make bzImage? The last 10 lines or so...if you could post that, we would have a better idea of how to help.

Sigh, I don't think you guys are getting the point of the post I know it is possible for me to use the kernel, but apparently, I have done something wrong and I want to fix it. I don't want to go through my learning-linux phase without knowing what I did wrong with doing something simple like compiling a kernel.

Ooh DaOne, I'll be right back with that info.

Build more stuff as modules. Ethernet cards, Sound cards....
Filesystems, make kernels big quickly. The only filesystem you need in your kernel is root filesystem and ext2 in case of initrd.img, well some of them cannot be modules, but most can.

You have not done anything "wrong" per se... Just wasteful. Everybody does this with their first few compiles because we're too scared to remove things. And then we'll be overly worried about size and reduce the kernel to an extent that it's unusable. And then you'll hit the sweet spot

What I'd recommend is, "Know your hardware well". Let's say you have a Realtek NIC, then remove support for everything else. Repeat this process for all "known" hardware, like USB, Bluetooth, joystick, tablet, etc.

Next comes the protocols... IPv6 is almost always unneeded for home use so you can remove that as well. Same with Appletalk, NetWare and other non TCP/IP protocols which is needed only on special setups.

Another area is filesystem... remove everything that you don't need. Let's say you only use ext3 and FAT32 on your system... then remove all other FS support like QNX, Reiser, and so on.

Most of these things only you will know because it's your system. We can only give pointers, you have to take it from there yourself.

Yes you did... However, try to load more things as modules instead of piling it all in the core.

I think this is what's causing your kernel to be so big.

You could save 66kb by saying no to math emulation. You dont need it if your cpu has a mathes coprocessor. You would have to look at your hardware to see what else you can take out.

Another thing... You said that it usually only takes 10 seconds to compile your kernel???

What kernel is that?

And what is your machine?

So how big is it now after you removed some stuff?
