OK recently I did a fresh/bare install of mini-slack 0.2 (based on slackware 10) with NO ( X, KDE, Gnome, Apps, etc,). Then after I installed the distribution I went to the slackware current package archive to get the current version of X.org (6.8.1). Well when I installed it I still had my default kernel 2.6.7 and I typed startx and it worked like a charm (keep in mind it's just X no desktop environment or window managers are installed yet it's just a Grey screen with bash on the top left corner at this time.

After that with my links browser downloaded and compiled/installed kernel 2.6.10 (using the 2.6.7 config file and just removing the stuff I don't need.) When I boot into the new kernel and type startx it will start for about a second and kick me back out. saying on the last two lines:

xterm: Error 14, errno21: is a directory
Reason: Spawn: open() failed on dev/tty

I have no Idea what the problem is but I also tried to startx using the 2.6.9 kernel and is has the same problem and I edited the xorg.conf file to change the keyboard module to kbd to no avail.

Also (in-case you are wondering why didn't use X on the installation CD) -> I not too long ago I did a bare install of slackware with X.org installed (that was on the cd) and I installed KDE 3.3.2 (with all it's libraries and dependencies) and tried to start it but it would not start! despite making the xinitrc shortcut.

I'm all out I ideas I and can only google so long with no answer. Every problem I had with linux it was solved in these forums and these forums has never let me down!

I cannot recall which config utility I used to make X work, but it definitely wasn't xf86config. It wasn't in the distribution anymore. I looked at your X log and it shows that you had the same font problems I had. That's because the config utility is pointing to directories that were in the previous Slackware distributions (and I guess X distributions), but now they aren't...

Try using xorgcfg or xorgconfig or xorgsetup.

Is one of them in your /usr/X11R6/bin directory?

PS: If you config again and launching X fails again, post the part of the Xorg.0.log near/at the end where it shows you the failure. The warnings about not finding the font trees might have been your error, or maybe not configuring the VESA card right.

Just a hint on reading your Xorg.0.log when trying to find problems.
Use "grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log"
This will give you just the lines with EE in them. (EE is error in Xorg.0.log speak)
