Have to modprobe emu10k1 after kernel compile

Bit of a newbie question...

I recently swapped over to slackware, set it up and decided to do a recompile of the kernel - without changing anything (except change machine type from 486 to pentium III)

When I booted the new kernel I had lost audio - I figured out I had to do a modprobe emu10k1 before I started X. Strangely enough, when I rebooted my original kernel I had to do the same! I may have changed something else, but I dont _think_ I did....

What might have happened to the driver loading? How could I make the emu10k1 driver load automatically again? What can I check to look for errors?

Scratch this question.

I realised that doing a modprobe emu10k1 gets sound going, but alsa is not working. Before I could run alsamixer, but now it says "function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device" on my old kernel, and my new one. Damn it!
