Has Anyone Managed To Get Chromium Running on Slack?
 

I'm not at my normal pc to refer properly to what I've tried - all I know is that I haven't been successful.

I'm pretty sure that I grabbed a .deb, ran src2pkg, was notified of a successful install, had to softlink a few libs, then threw in the towel.

I'm really not interested in windowizing Chrome, tho I did, begrudgingly, take a stab at installing cxchromium and failing there (iirc, it would get to the point where it was "finalizing the install", and hang there.)

Lest this turns into a "Chrome/Firefox" sucks kinda thread, let me say that I am 100% happy with FF. It opens in under 2 seconds, loads pages almost instantly (perhaps because I use privoxy--->squid, perhaps not...), isn't the memory hog it used to be, hasn't crashed in eons, etc., etc., - I just want to have a look at Chrome.

I may be wrong but I don't believe src2pkg works on deb packages.

Also, isn't chrome supposed to be java???

Anyway, there are two likely reasons why the Debian converted package doesn't work:
1. Debian puts stuff in weird places that aren't compatible with Slackware
2. Your system is missing some dependencies (like nss)

More than likely, You'll have to (and want to) get the SVN sources and build your own chrome. ThisLQ post does a good job explaining the steps. Also read the chromium Getting Started for Developers section on building chrome

Although it's less likely, you might also mean the game Chromium B.S.U. If you want that, go to the sourceforge page for the sources (not old the unmaintained home page)

Did you install the package created by src2pkg using installpkg?

It would better help if you'd posted the error you got launching debian's chromium. There might be a shell script, which sets up environment and you might need to launch it instead.

Thank you. I had read the thread you referenced, but hadn't gotten as far as downloading any of the suggested dependencies since I stopped "experimenting" before any attempt at opening chromium-browser asked for them.

Yes. I installed the package created with src2pkg using installpkg.

The first 4 or 5 attempts to start chromium-browser failed because there were missing libs, which I managed to created with soft symlinks. However, I realized that my hands were going to get dirtier than I wished when I got this error:

Obviously, this was becoming a job for superman and was going to require a lot more time and effort than I would be willing to spend, just to satisfy a minor curiosity. Of course, I was hoping that superman existed somewhere out here in slackworld and would come to the rescue with something like, "Indeed, my little grasshopper. I have rolled my own slackbuild, and it is here." Alas, that doesn't appear to be the case....
