has anybody any experience on installing a second gcc version?

I have an old version of LEDA. LEDA is a library of the data types and algorithms of combinatorial computing. It's in C++ and used to be free and open-source for educational use. Nowdays it's not. I used to use this in one of my undergraduate courses. This old LEDA won't compile with a gcc newer that 2.95.
SO, I'm about to install a second gcc version in /opt. Has anybody done this?
If I remember correct 2 years ago, when I had installed FC2 it had 2 different gcc versions. So, this is feasible.
Any suggestions before I proceed?

I've done it; it's no big deal. The command gcc is really a link to gcc-<version>. If you want to compile with a different gcc version, you have to explicitly give the full name of the gcc version you want to use.

Actualy I found a this page in tldp http://www.tldp.org/LDP/lfs/html/cha.../gcc-2953.html

I remember reading somewhere that many kernel developers still use the 2.95 compiler because it compiles a lot faster than the newer ones, and is very stable. Yeah it was really simple.
Thanks for the reply.
LEDA worked.
