Not to Mozilla. NPAPI:Pepper - MozillaWiki

They are working this angle. mozilla/shumway @ GitHub

I am testing it out right now. I works but not on all sites. I have both flash and shumway enabled.

Very nice! I was not aware of that project.

What about Opera?
What do they use for flash?
Opera uses flash. I have not heard of any effort on Opera's part to develop its own alternative, but I'm not an Opera insider by any means, just a user.

It has its own plugins directory, /usr/lib/opera/plugins, but also scans the Firefox directory, /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins.

Hasn't Linus actually said this somewhere?

He did say that about Nvidia, which is what I believe Martinus2u was referring to, and you can find a copy of the video on youTube.

Opera has, and has had for some time, built-in support for HTML5. but I haven't had much luck with it.
Yesterday, I installed the Shumway/HTML5 extension into Firefox and it worked very well (in Firefox). Unfortunately, since it is a Firefox extension and not a plug-in, Opera doesn't see it.

I think HTML5 is supposed to be the next big thing

Indeed - you can opt in to the Youtube HTML5 trial and I think most of the videos there I've seen recently have been HTML5.

Agreed. I am hopeful we will be able to put flash behind us in the not too distant future.

Why? The things you need Flash for now you will need something like it for in future, and that is looking like it will be Silverlight.
Personally I'm already mourning the death of Flash as it means I can't use any legal movie streaming sites on my PC. If things carry on this way everything bar YouTube will be inaccessible without paying Microsoft or Apple to access it.

youTube, mp4, VLC plug-in.

I've just read that, supposedly, youTube has made all their videos available in the mp4 format and it is up to your browser and youTube to negotiate the best player for your setup. I can't find anything about his at youTube, but if is true, would it be possible to use VLC, via its plug-in, to play youTube videos in the mp4 format?

You don't need VLC to play MP4 files in a browser. All browsers (well, at least Chrome, Firefox, Safari and IE) play them directly.

It's possible to write browser extensions that rewrite Youtube's pages so that they just give you a direct link to the MP4 video. I'm sure those already exist.

Not true, here's the list of available HTML5 <video> formats and browsers that support them:
