Happy 25th Birthday, Slackware
1 Attachment(s)
On 17th July, 1993, Patrick Volkerding announced Slackware 1.0. Now, 25 years later, it's still here and still going strong, as is its BDFL.
If you want to see the original release announcement, it's here: http://www.slackware.com/announce/1.0.php https://groups.google.com/forum/#!or...k/8dZXz_tbJGoJ I am a relatively new Slackware user. I've been with it for six months and it's the most stable and logical OS I've ever used, though I'm aware that there are others here who have been using it for far longer than that. So thank you Patrick, thank you devs, thank you community, and thank to all those who have made Slackware go from strength to strength. Also thanks to my brother for introducing me to Slackware back in 2003. I didn't start using it till 2018 though: I was a Windows user back in the early 2000s and only switched to Linux last year. Using Slackware was my primary 'geek goal' ever since hearing of it, and I'm very happy to be here [after quite a bit of research and learning]. Here's to the next 25 years. It would be good if some users could share stories of how they got into Slackware. That would be interested to read. EDIT: some articles: https://fossbytes.com/slackware-birt...-oldest-active https://opensource.com/article/18/7/...-linux-distro/ https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/0..._of_a_century/ EDIT2: I think the date is officially the 16th July, but that depends on the time zone as one can see above [17th GMT]! Some more nostalgia: Quote:

Happy 25th Anniversary Slackware!

Slackware 12 was my first Linux, and remains my daily driver to this day. Amazing distribution. I'm in for another 25.
EDIT: unrelated to the 25th mark (but then 25 is just an arbitrary mark anyway), but I interviewed Patrick Volkerding many years ago. It was a fun, weird interview. http://www.hackerpublicradio.org/eps.php?id=0853 |
Happy Anniversary and a big thanks to Patrick.

First tried v8. Full-time Slacker since v12.1. There are simply no alternatives. Thank you Pat, and all other contributors big and small. |

Happy Birthday Slackware!
I'm fairly new to Slackware, too. I've been using it since a few months before 14.2 was released. It has cured me of my distro-hopping habits. I simply have no reason to use anything else. Slackware can be whatever you want it to be (even if you want it to have systemd and Gnome ). Edit: Why does the little icon next to my post indicate I use Fedora? Anyone know how to fix that? |
Happy Birthday Slackware!
I have been using Slackware since Red Hat has become a commercial distribution. It has no side effects, the only problem is that I can not learn anything else even though over the years I have tried Debian and Ubuntu. |
