Hang at "Unmounting remote filesystems"

Hello,
Just recently, and for no apparent reason, my computer has started hanging when I turn it off: when the _ cursor is flashing after the "Unmounting remote filesystems" message. This happens randomly, as sometimes the computer shuts down fine. There are no error messages and the LEDs on the tower show no sign of life, the cursor just stops blinking and nothing happens. I am then forced to shut off the PC with the button, and when I restart it says that my partitions have not been cleanly unmounted. Searching on Google and on the forums proved fruitless. I am running Slackware 10.0 kernel 2.6.10. Can anyone help?

Are you using nfs to mount partitions on another machine?

No, I am not. Is that what the computer is doing, unmounting NFS partitions? If so, how can I stop that (since I dont need it)?

I get that if I leave my iPod plugged in. Do you have anything like that plugged in?

man lsof

i.e. lsof -u root

find what processes are open, and adjust accordingly. Slackware should not have any auto update scripts open, it could be ntp, or as I am thinking, it is nfs.

kind of hard if you can't tell us what is running.

The command to kill a daemon is root#>/etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs(or whatever) stop. Perusing /etc/rc.d/init.d will give you an idea about which daemons are installed.

The nfs subsystem on Slackware is controlled by the script /etc/rc.d/rc.nfsd you can run (as root)
# /etc/rc.d/rc.nfsd stop
to stop it if you are not using it you can turn it off by changing the file permissions of the script with
# chmod 644 /etc/rc.d/rc.nfsd
this will stop it starting when the system next boots.
I would advise that you also look at the permissions of all the files in /etc/rc.d and see if there are any other services being started that you don't use as you should turn off them as well.

The only peripherals I have are my scanner and my printer. No iPods.

"lsof -u root" returns many lines, but nothing along the lines of "nfs", "nfsd" or "ntp"....

I removed the "executable" flag on the rc.nfsd file now, I'll restart to see what happens.

Thanks everyone for the help =D
