Just so everybody knows, the problem with my SD/MMC card reader is solved. Guess what: I bit the dust and compiled my own kernel. Hell, this is Slackware. Compiling a kernel is practically obligatory with this distro. It turns out that neither generic-smp-2.6.21.5-smp nor huge-smp-2.6.21.5-smp had SCSI LUNs enabled.
But I'm stil mounting it the old way. No HAL for me, thanks.

You should read the Slackware 12.0
CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT,
UPGRADE.TXT and
RELEASE_NOTES!
Then the problem could have been corrected with modprobe unless you have a special device that requires a compile.
