To test a new installation of Linux, I use the Windows Media stream at CBC Radio to listen to Montreal's stream. When I clicked the low bandwidth stream for Montreal, with Mozilla Firefox in SW 12.0, the gxine plugin attempts to play the stream. After a dialog to configure gxine, the stream starts to buffer, but when it begins to play, the KDE Desktop completely crashes, and eventually gives me the command line prompt.
I have done this with Moz FF in another distro and the stream is played by MPlayer plugin. Also I have recently tried to use gxine with Zenwalk 4.6.1 with similar bad results.
Given gxine's behavior, I would rather avoid using it. This is the first time I have used Slackware. I am familiar with distros like Kubuntu, Mint, PCLOS, Vector, Puppy. I do not know how to change the file association to invoke another media player to play this audio stream.
Any suggestions?

EDIT: I have installed mplayer-plugin-3.40 and MPlayer-codecs-essential-20061022. Now the mplayer plugin comes up when I click the Montreal low bw link with Firefox. But it doesnt play because something is still missing. What is missing?
Konqueror still attempts to play with gxine plugin, and crashes bigtime.
