gui jumpiness
I'm at work right now so I'm not at home to try a different gui. Anyway, I've been using an ATI AIW 9700 pro video card. I got fed up with ATI crappy linux drivers that are extremely hard to get working (I have a kt400 chipset mb with 8x agp auto enabled), and once I finally did get them working they were extremely unstable in 3d accelerated applications. So I just got a Geforce FX 5900 ultra, and now I'm going to sell the AIW and pay back most of this card. Anyway, I reinstalled Slack 9.0 from an empty harddrive. Compiled a 2.4.21 kernel. Installed the nvidia driver, modified the xf86config file accordingly, and kde is now working w/ the nvidia splash screen and everything. However, the gui sessions are extremely jumpy now. This wasn't the case w/ the AIW 9700 pro. The mouse will move smooth for a second and then jump, then move smooth for a second, then jump. I have 512 megs of ram and an athlon xp 2600+, so my system isn't lacking. Typing does the same thing. If I go to word and start typing a document, it's smooth for a second then there's a delay, then smooth, then delay. In fact, everything in the gui has a 1/2 second delay every now and again. I don't know if it's related to the video card, or if there's some other setting in the xf86config file that I don't know about. I haven't tried another gui besides kde yet, so I don't know if that's the culprit either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. THX.
