GUI installation and hardware support

Just a quick question, Does slackware have a GUI installation? And how is the hardware detection on it? I am currently having problem installing one of my HD with Libranet. Any chance Slackware is better? For hardware support?

MR

Btw is Slackware more like *BSD (Specially FreeBSD)? What advantages does Slackware hold over Debian?

Slack has X (a gui) on it.

Slack has an ncurses based installer that's not pretty like a full gui but works in much the same way and does the job quickly and easily. You could post the exact errors you're having with your HD, there's also an installation forum for slackware here.

Slackware uses BSD style init scripts and is similar in that almost everything is configured by modifying text files, I'm sure someone can give you a more educated answer though. I've also read that it aims to be the most "Unix-like" distro. I've just started tinkering with FreeBSD myself and having used Slackware for a while the transition hasn't been too difficult, but I thin going from say Mandrake to FreeBSD would be a rude surprise.

I actually did, but didn't get a solution yet: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=157399

Is the installation very difficult compared to Mandrake, Fedora and the easy distro's like that. I am still relatively new. I dont want to install something very difficult like Debian. Thanks

I just partitioned last night and installed Slackware 9.1, my first time using Linux ever so I would consider it easy, but that's me.

Uh, did you read the readme from netspace.net???

If you're reading this on ftp.slackware.com, you will find that the
ISO images here cannot be downloaded. This is because we simply don't
have the bandwidth at ftp.slackware.com to provide ISO images. ISO
downloads take a long time, and block people from retrieving small
updates.

If you're looking to download the ISO, consider using BitTorrent.
If there are active torrents available, information may be found on
on http://slackware.com. BitTorrent is available as a package for
Slackware in the /extra directory.

Mirror sites may also have the ISO images up for FTP.

Use the .asc files here to verify your ISO images are authentic.

What does the readme matter? It is not the official ftp.slackware.com site, just a mirror.
M.R,
Download everything with the word 'install' in it. The *.asc and *.md5 files are for checking if the iso's are valid.
Edit: Just noticed that there are no *.iso files. You will need to use another mirror, http://www.slackware.com/getslack/ has a list with some Australian ones if that's what you need.

Thanks for the explanation aaa. And yes i did read the readme file, but didn't really undertand it. And I need to get it from ftp.netspace.net.au becuase it's free traffic. In Australia we still have this stupid download caps, that's the problem. I have less that 1 GB download left. So anyway, i guess i will wait to next month. Thanks to everyone for their help.
