Question Graphics card probs

I got an ATI something or other ninety something hundred. I love NVIDIA and would never buy an ATI card, but it was free and a vast improvement over my current pci mx420 with 64 megs of vram. Now I've got this ATI 128 thing and have no idea how to conf it for slack. Most of the info i find is for older ATI drivers.

I tried 64 bit slack (slamd), but ATI's drivers do not compile custom kernel deals like NVIIDA, they're preset (give it up for ATI{yay}). It thinks i have slack 10.1 which I do, but some directories are different. The install fails.

i installed 32 bit slack installed the driver successfully, and modded my xorgconf to what I thought I was supposed to do, but there is no splash screen or gfx accell. I consulted a friend whose card this was, but the last time he did the drivers was awhile ago.

Please help me! I can't wait to be playing Battlefront On my smoking linux system.

thanks in advance,

slackwarebilly

please don't destroy me for posting this just because there are probably tutorials on it, i tried that already

It helps to know more about the card. Get a hardware listing with the "control center" type program. With KDE, it is | System | Info Center | PCI. Or you can use su to become root and try:
$ /sbin/lspci -v
$ gvim /var/log/dmesg &

The ATI 128 might be a "Rage Pro" which is a card I used to use and liked. I think it used the "ati" driver in XFree86. You can find documetation on the file: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/README.r128 or with google and set your X11 configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf, possibly) to load options for the driver. It could be that your card only does 2D accelaration.

Good luck.

Arrow Sorry all

Sorry everybody, It's an 8500 LE, but I just switched back to my NVIDIA for the LAN party. I think the previous owner said it was buggy anyway. I guess I'll have to wait for an AGP gfx card.

thanks anyways,

slackwarebilly
