Something doesn't seem right, I recently compiled a kernel with all the necessities to enable 3D acceleration, I think. The savage driver works wonderful with the console but gets botched when I try using it with X :S.
I HAVE edited my xorg.conf file, but no go. 'dri' doesn't even load. (working with vesa at the moment...X always gets botched when I replace vesa with savage, what the?!?)
Am I missing anything in the kernel?
Could anyone point out any faults or fixes?
Do I have to download anything?
Any help appreciated.
I don't know how to do it on your distro but don't use the kernels drm.
Code:
Processor type and features --->
<*> MTRR (Memory Type Range Register) support
Character devices --->
<M> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)
[M] Intel 440LX/BX/GX and I815/I820/I830M/I830MP/I840/I845/I850/I860 support
(Enable your chipset instead of the above.)
< > Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support)
I scrapted my first attempt. Tried again, this time compiling everything as modules. And apparently it works, to a certain extent. 'dri' still is not enabled. I checked out /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri and it looks like theres no 'savage_dri' or anything similar.
Update: Everything works except 'dri', it just doesn't want to load. I have agpart...etc. all compiled as modules but no go. Do I have to re-compile everything as in; http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/Building ? The graphics driver I'm using, savagefb seems to work without fault...but dri...direct rendering...argh, no go. Please could someone clarify how to enable dri/direct rendering.
um anyone? Why does it seem like some dri related components are missing? What's up? Have I missed a step?

...and sometimes links that are recommended, have already been visited.
Due to your post I revisited your guide and /bin/bash's, I delved a little deeper but still, no luck.
According to my motherboard manual and Windows AND to my common knowledge, I'm using: S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR.
I've compiled my kernel with agpart and all other related parts as modules, and tried to install the packages from dri.freedesktop.org...the savage package doesn't seem to want to compile properly. It complains my modules aren't updated, whatever thats suppose to mean.
After installing the common package, I edited my xorg.conf file to load "dri", but instead of using vesa I used savagefb(kernel-module) (reading somewhere that savagefb supported my ProSavageDDR, and because previously using savage(kernel-module) borked my x.)The outcome was...well 'blank.'
Is this a sign 'dri' is working? I hope so...
Now I'm wondering, if I was to use vesa instead, could I use dri? Because apparently savage/savagefb(kernel-modules) don't work.
Or should I try to get the savage package from dri.freedesktop.org completely 'installed'?
Or maybe someone has a third 'method/theory' I could try?
Please, I just want to tie these loose ends up.

I can boot into just about all my window managers ok, but after a second or two of moving my mouse or even by not doing anything at all my screen becomes botched.
Bump. I've done everything to supposedly get savage and dri working, in my opinion anyway. But why isn't it working? Outdated drivers, incompatiblities? The last time I attempted to get dri working with a savage driver, it seemed to work (scan the post above) but it didn't.
Heck I even tried enabling it with a vesa driver, the default one in slackware 11 anyway...and of course it didn't work. (sarcasm)
Even savagefb...(more sarcasm)
what's up?
My KNOPPIX Live CD seems to use a savage driver no problem, and I have a nagging feeling if I tried to enable dri on it, well, I suspect it would work.
Perhaps it's because it uses xfree opposed to xorg.
(irony)
Oh I'm ranting, but not ranting without a cause.
Could anyone give me additional insight or confirm some of my suspicions?
Any feedback at all would be great. (well positive feedback preferably)
