BUMP!
Sorry to bump the thread, just wanted to update something related.
Just to keep the life interesting, I downloaded the latest AMD 14.6Beta catalyst driver and installed it on my workstation's main Slackware64 14.1 partition. But in the heat of the moment and excitement, I didn't realize that I was booted into my custom 3.14.17 kernel. Thus I had to refer the following guide to install this latest driver on the kernel versions >3.13 -
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...allation_Guide
The reference point is "Installing Catalyst on kernel >=3.14.0 (3.14.2 including)".
I think on the stock kernel, it won't be necessary.
The installation went like a breeze, though it couldn't create a Slackware native package because of the spaces in the path of the installation file, that's what the error reported, so I just installed it directly. The installer was smart enough to determine that the Radeon drive conflicts with catalyst so it created a file named blacklist-fglrx.conf in /etc/modprobe.d/ and placed 'blacklist radeon' in it. Cool! I later on placed 'blacklist radeonhd' in it too.
Rebooted without an issue. For test, I enabled all the KDE desktop effects, all worked like charm. I'm surprised by the crispness of the desktop now. Checked the Catalyst control center, enabled the "Tear Free Desktop" and in image options - Use graphic processor for scaling. My desktop is crispier than before, the colors look better. I tested some 720p VLC videos and 1080p flash videos in Firefox and worked like charm.
Though I don't seem to find any manual fan control system in the CCC, I learned that we can do it using aticonfig, which I'm going to play around with tomorrow. The GPU is not overheating as of now.
Regards.
