googleearth & SW14.0

I installed Google Earth 7.1.1.1888 from Slackbuilds.org.
Works fine except when I try to view any of the pictures
scattered liberally through the display all I get is a
blank pop-up with (maybe) some text.

I can't find any error messages and a google search
doesn't show anyone else having this problem.

I have run out of ideas looking for the problem and would
appreciate any ideas anyone may have.

TIA, Nadrek

Are you running 64 bit by any chance? If so then it's not just Slackware affected and you might find a solution linked to in this thread but I've not gone through the process so can't confirm it works: https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...le-4175463081/

No, I run 32 bit. Haven't seen any real reason to
go to 64 bit. . . . yet.

Still working on this problem. It's probably something in
the original install that I didn't install, but I've
yet to figure out what.

what's your GPU? I guess it's related with your GPU capability

worsel 09-07-2013 06:20 PM

The user manual for the ASUS M4A78LT-M motherboard claims
the gpu is an "Integrated ATI Radeon(tm) HD 3000 GPU".

I am surprised, but since it sounds like the same issue perhaps this is a requirement for a newer library being "passed down" to the 32 bit from the 64 bit release?
Since the 3D bit works I'd be surprised if it were anything to do with the graphics hardware -- I'm not confident enough to rule it out though.

I have the same problem, Slackware64-14.0, and the same happens with Kubuntu64-13.04 (same machine), my GPU is Nvidia GT-220 with 2 Gb, the pictures pops up blank frames...I notice that several others distros have the same problem as well...google-earth works fine, sometimes has a crash at start and sometimes works fine (except the pictures)...

273 09-07-2013 07:08 PM

I have the "works fine, sometimes has a crash at start and sometimes works fine" problem also but Google Earth has always been like that.
I am given to understand that the missing pictures problem is there on Windows too -- I've not seen it yet in my VMs though so perhaps it's the Beta versions of GE only.
It's a real shame as, the crashing during startup sometimes aside, GE seems to get better under Linux all the time and the missing photo's are really spoiling it.
If a fix comes to Slack before Debian I might even make the change :p.

I did test Google Earth 7.1.1.1888 in my VM Windows 8 - 64 bits (Virtualbox 64 bits) and it works fine with pictures and all, just a little bit slower than in Slackware64-14.0. Maybe next Linux 64 bits version of GE will fix it...

Okay, I'll try this again. Sent a note yesterday and marked the thread solved.
The thread is so marked, but the note is missing :-\

I reverted to Google Earth 6.0.3.2197 and got the pictures back. I'll keep working
on getting the newer version running, but for now everything is working.

Thanks for your comments and help!
