Google Earth not starting

One of the reasons I wanted to try Slackware was because Google Earth no longer works in Debian (at least not for me). Now i'm suffering the same problem in Slackware 13.1.

I built from SBo, all appears fine but when I open the program the splash screen appears then disappears and the program doesn't open. The crash log reads -

Code:
Major Version 5
Minor Version 2
Build Number 0001
Build Date Jun 10 2010
Build Time 16:15:55
OS Type 3
OS Major Version 2
OS Minor Version 6
OS Build Version 33
OS Patch Version 4
Crash Signal 6
Crash Time 1280864555
Up Time 4.3367

It's been reported to Google according to one of the radeon driver developers:

http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showp...6&postcount=29

It's a problem for all the open source drivers at the moment, though whether it's a bug with google earth or with the drivers is still unclear.

That would explain why it only happens with the newer kernels. I should probably just wait it out then i spose..

GoogleEarth 5.2 for Linux is a real shame!

Google makes a lot of money with Linux, but only supports Windows and MacOSX.

I can not understand what happened with GE 5.2.
GE 5.1 works perfectly on Slackware 13.1 also with Qt4-4.6.3.

It's easy to fix.

Code:
cd /opt/google-earth/
wget http://librarian.launchpad.net/7037027/libGL.so.1 -O libGL.so.1
(Information from Keith Hedger in this LQ thread -- thanks Keith!)

Cheers I didn't know I could still get 5.1, but just did, and installed it - works fine. I couldn't get the slackbuild script from SBo to work but I just installed it normally as a shell script instead. I should be able to remove it with slackpkg later if they ever sort 5.2.

To be fair, that's not really a fix. It's a workaround :-)

Just for info, that workaround doesn't work for me - I still can't use 5.2.

But did you try the *other* fix that I posted 2010-08-03 22:15? Hmmm?

That's the one i'm talking about. I can't see any other fix/workaround posted - can you? Hmmm?

It appeared that you were referring to the 'workaround' (that's the exact word you used, apparently referring to the immediately preceding post, which distinguished the "workround" of using 5.1 from the "fix" of downloading an obsolete libGL). Thanks for the clarification.

It would be helpful if you could confirm whether you've got the downloaded libGL.so.1 in /opt/GoogleEarth, whether it's executable, whether you are still getting a sig6 or some other error, and what build of GE 5.2 you are using (5.2.1.1547 has just come out, the previous build was 5.2.1.1329). Maybe that might help solve your problem.

I'm fine using 5.1 for the time being; I was just updating the thread - yes I downloaded that file, it was executable, it doesn't work though. Don't take it personally.

Well, it's worth trying to download the latest build 5.2.1.1547. It appears to have a fix for the sig6 crash, and thus seems not to need the obsolete libGL.so.1.

There are plenty of people having problems with GE 5.2 on all Linux distros, and I'm anxious to know whether the problem has in fact gone away with the latest build.

Yes, it's true
i have downloaded this and run it without any problem
just chmod +x GoogleEarthLinux.bin
./GoogleEarthLinux.bin

and it runs smoothly
