google earth crashes X

Since installing Slackware 12 I have had a few install problems that I havnt had before. I installed Google Earth and every time I start it up it gives a quick splash screen and then crashes out followed by X crash, then I have to startx again.
Tis also happens with xine. It starts up with a zigzag type of screen and when I quit then X shuts down. I have installe Google Earth twice before in Slack 11 and 10.2 - no problem.
Is there a solution to this.
Skype which I installed before just doesnt start up. I installed it from the official site and then when It didnt work I downloaded the .tgz package with no better luck.

Googleearth crash

Yes. The same thing happened to me. I found an answer on an Ubuntu message board

In our case with Slackware go to /opt/google-earth/
Then run this.
wget http://librarian.launchpad.net/7037027/libGL.so.1 -O libGL.so.1

Hi TaylorVcl
That fixed it alright!
I dunno what happened but that did it. Still no luck with Skype though.
Cheers!

My system is Fedora8 X86-64
It works well after libGL.so.1 was copied to googleearth home directory!

Just wanted to add that this fix worked on gOS also.
My path was different is all.
Thanks

I'll add this did NOT fix the problem in Mandriva. The library did stop the X crash, but google earth no longer loaded at all, the splash appeared and it hanged indefinitely.

i have the same problem on ubuntu 7.10.
adding the so file did stop X restarting but now GEarth hangs on the splash indefinitely.

using ati 8.1 drivers for inbuilt x1250 on Compaq 6715b

quantum, glad you posted. You might be able to tailor this to ubuntu, it worked perfectly for Mandriva:

good luck,

Thanks to pointing me to that Cat. Before i tried it i'd notice that glxinfo was reporting that direct rendering=no i.e. no 3d accel, even though i was using the ati prop drivers. I removed linux-restricted-modules-kernelXXX and xorg-drivers-fglrx packages from ubuntu and reinstalled the ati driver and now GEarth works fine without downloading either of the .so. files.

well done!

Don't know about you, but google earth scares the Dickens out of me. The shot of my property shows me and my dogs sitting out back in it. (and a ton of my son's junk cars which are thankfully now gone)

rvrichie 07-05-2010 11:44 AM

works on Fedora 11, too.
;)

Fedora 13 Google Earth Crash

I ran libGL.so.1 in /opt/google-earth - This solution solved the "signal 6" problem and Google Earth now works! Thanks!
