If you compile the Alsa drivers in the kernel tree then no problem, if you compile Alsa separately then you need to reinstall. Things like alsatools/utils don't need to be recompiled (well, if there isn't a major change in the API I guess).

That's the difference then - I compile alsa separately and don't use the kernel modules.

unless you rebuild all your modues, which it will clean all these directorys under lib/modules/kernelnumber, or, you can move the alsa out first and put it back later, which I often forgot to do, so I have the same problem to recomplie alsa every now and then. Kernel number miss match screws up, then you got to do the alsa again.

tamtam fwiw you really should post a link to your dell support page, hence people can see what sound card you have, etc.

you could require OSS device which needs a modprobe or something.

I'm sure the wealth of knowledge of the people on these forums can get you up and running

to play it safe your probably better off using slackware's 2.4.31 or 2.6.13 kernel as none of us know what you did in your kernel :D that will rule out any possiblity that you may have done something wrong on your side :D

Sound card worked in 2.4.xx kernel but not with 2.6.5, prob because I needed to update ALSA.

Anyways an update, everything has been in vain as some stupid idiot dropped the laptop off a bench and now the display is totally capute. :cry:

There seems no way to rescue it now. Unless any one has some bright ideas. It was only a small dunt sound it made.
