Going to give sendmail a shot, one question

I haven't done any type of administration in ages. When I did, I never played with Sendmail, I only used Qmail. A few weeks ago I got bored and I dug out a old box to play around with Slackware on. So far, I have everything up and running the way I want it but I am looking for a new challenge.

I want to learn how to setup Sendmail. Are there any good guides that will show me what is a good idea and what is a bad one? I am sure I could just tinker with things and what not, but the last thing I want to do is make an error and do something like make my box an open relay for spammers.

I do not want to set it up like I used to have Qmail setup. I previously had it setup where there was no remote access. No external mail clients. I want everything to run through local mail clients on the machine.

Forgive me, I know this is a newb question, but I am not asking you guys to hold my hand. I just need someone to point me in the right direction to a faq or a guide or what not. I searched here but I found nothing.

Thank you in advance.
