I've been trying to get GnuCash running on my slack 10.2 machine for several months now. I've tried packages from linuxpackages.net, but never could get past an error with libgnomeui.
I don't use Gnome, and generally only use KDE when I'm running a GUI. Even though I won't use it for much of anything else (maybe a couple of things) I went ahead and installed GWARE, which was a breeze.
After that, I figured that instead of messing with pre-built packages, I'd just compile from source, so off to www.gnucash.org I went to d/l the latest source for 2.0.1. After about 1.5 hours of make and make install running, I finally have a working install of GnuCash running in Slack 10.2.
same here. I put in the free rock gnome on my up to date slack box and it just blew out all my links, shortcuts, menu's,eh what a nightmare, and the fixes that they have on the site didnt work.
in the end i've got ubuntu running in vmware to use it.

I've heard nightmare stories about Gnome installations causing havock on menus in Slack, but Gware didn't do much to my menus at all. There are some new Gnome apps in some of the submenus, which I expected, and they're all in the appropriate area, but my K menu looks the same, just with a couple of handfuls of new apps from Gnome.
I was wondering all this GNUcash stuff and I double clicked gnucash in Debian Synaptic package manager and it brings up a huge list of dependencies. It's very closely tied up with Gnome... No wonder then it's so much trouble. Hopefully there will be simpler versions in the future which don't have so many deps.

I'm pretty certain you can do a search and see that dropline gnome has done some damaged to Slackware systems on this forum...
For me, gnucash is one of two gnome-dependent programs that are worth the effort to track all the additional dependencies, etc, in order to be able to use. gramps is the other. I am not interested in running gnome, but I want those two. I found a good slack-required list (in the linuxpackages.net package for each program) & downloaded the packages I needed from Freerock Gnome -current. I am now tracking 49 FRG -current packages, most of them needed for gnucash. I did have to jump through a few hoops to get gnucash to run the first time, but I think it was worth it. It can be done in Slackware!

Bill
That sounds like POS (Point of Sale) software, not general finance like GnuCash. You could try to look for those kind of software in the usual places (SourceForge, , directory.fsf.org, linux.org, Google)
Distribution: Slackware personally & for all servers/Customized Fedora Core for clients/customers desktops

I developed a complete POS(point of sale) system for Zumiez, Inc. about 5 years ago, with all those features you mentioned, and more. See http://www.jr-computers.com/zumiez.html for a brief description. All of the Zumiez stores world wide use the Linux based system I created, and they are very happy with it.
Unfortunatelly, it was a contract job to use Linux and other open source software, along with commercial software(informix database, etc.) to create a custom system for their needs, and not freely available.
There are a lot of open source apps out there that are available, but it would still take a lot of work customizing them to be taylored to your specific needs. It took me a good year full time to develop the entire system for Zumiez, once I started that project. You're in for a LOT of work! Have fun!
I would be glad if someone tells me step by step what packages I have to get and compile and where from, to get the latest version ot gnucash working on my Slackware 11.0 with 2.6.18. I am asking cos I could nowhere find this info explicitly provided. Here you discussed some problems occuring with the system when installing gnome libraries. That is why I would be glad if some of you who has already tested it on his system, shares his experience with me
tramni1980:
The first thing you need to realize is that gnucash is a gnome dependent program. You must have gnome installed, or at least a large number of the gnome libraries. If you do not have gnome installed, I recommend Freerock Gnome(FRG). I did a comparison between it, GWare & Dropline & had less trouble with FRG. FRG also has a gnucash package. Once you have installed FRG (I used the minimum install) & working, find "gnucash" in the FRG Packages.txt file & install any required/depends files they list that you don't have installed. Now install the gnucash package. It should work fine. If it doesn't, try starting it with:
Quote:
$ gnucash &
from a terminal. Then fix or post back any errors you get.

Hello!
Here is where I maneged to get to:
I downloaded and installed the following files:
avahi-0.6.12-i486-1frg.tgz libbonobo-2.14.0-i486-1frg.tgz
dbus-0.62-i486-2frg.tgz libbonoboui-2.14.0-i486-1frg.tgz
esound-0.2.36-i486-1.tgz libffi-20030919-i486-1.tgz
g-wrap-1.9.6-i486-1frg.tgz libgnome-2.14.1-i486-3frg.tgz
gail-1.8.11-i486-1frg.tgz libgnomecanvas-2.14.0-i486-1frg.tgz
glitz-0.4.4-i486-1frg.tgz libgnomeprint-2.12.1-i486-1frg.tgz
gnome-keyring-0.4.9-i486-1frg.tgz libgnomeprintui-2.12.1-i486-1frg.tgz
gnome-vfs-2.14.2-i486-1frg.tgz libgnomeui-2.14.1-i486-1frg.tgz
gnucash-2.0.2-i686-1jto.tgz libgsf-1.14.1-i486-1frg.tgz
goffice-0.2.1-i486-1frg.tgz libofx-0.8.0-i486-1frg.tgz
gtkhtml-3.10.3-i486-1frg.tgz
The files not having "frg" I compiled by myself.
When I type "gnucash" into a console, it complains:
gnucash-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libffi.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
