Gnome3.36 from Scratch on Slackware Current

Recently I've built Gnome 3.34.0 ( dlackware ) on Slackware current, it works quite well. But let's be honest I'm not very happy, because it based on SystemD.

I'm in the process to build Gnome 3.36 without SystemD based on BLFS.

Might want to talk to saxa of the Dropline Gnome project.

I didn't know that you could build gnome on LFS without using their systemd option as the init.

As another point of reference you might want to look at GUIX, which uses gnu shepherd rather than systemd as its init. They use elogind to build gnome and need to apply a few other patches which you can see here: https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/gu...ages/gnome.scm (look for the 'substitute' keyword). I think they are still on gnome-3.34 though.

No it is not, it is just no sense for me to write anything out until we really have something new :)

I forgot my screenshot.
First run of 3.36 just today.

Shortly more news about it.

That's great! I would like to know, where I can take bug reports? Because there is something wrong with gdm.

Code:

Failed to parse options: Unknown option -nodaemon
My workaround is to use lightdm at the moment.

thanks.

Ok, the best thing is to send a mail to the development mailing list on sf.net.
Link is here but you have to be subscribed and have a sf.net account.
Development List <dropline-gnome-devel@lists.sourceforge.net>

Maybe one day I move everything to git or github, but who knows when :) .

Ok for gdm , I know that something is wrong with it, for now in this phase I am mostly interested in having it
so I can build other stuff. I actually never use it and start my sessions with startx or since now we have also
wayland you can start the gnome-shell directly from TTY. It doesnt work well yet, all is still way buggy.

So feel free to report whatever your findings are and I will be happy to include fixes and share or help
with whatever needed.

Mostly I think there is a problem with elogind and pam.

I am able to run gnome-shell nested froman xfce terminal. And also the full session from within xfce terminal by running gnome-shell --x11 --replace , but it messes still lots of stuff.
