What do you mean it looks bad? That's real gnome right there buddy. Sure open source lets you fix things to a certain look but Slackware leaves it alone so that user can do what she/he wants. But if you want to make it look 'pretty' then change a theme, go to
http://art.gnome.org and pick a few things you like. Also on freshmeat there is some stuff. As for gdm-logins, there is some good ones there too, also on art-gnome.org
To have a gdmlogin: gedit /etc/inittab and set to run level 4
