Gnome & Alsa Problems

I am running Slackware 10 w/ Gnome (Dropline) 2.6 and i'm using the via82xx sound driver. I can't play more than 1 sound at the same time, and i'm always listening to music and if some other program calls a sound it completely freezes up forcing me to shut it off . I imagine theres a way to make it so more than 1 sound can play at the same time (i know theres a word for this but i dont know what...) but I dont know how to change this. BTW sound worked fine in KDE 3.2.3. Anyone else have this problem? Thanks in advance!

you need either hardware or software mixing....

if your card doesn't support hardware mixing with the ALSA
driver you can set up an asoundrc for software mixing. Dmix
is the name of the software mixing plugin (alsa-project.org).

However you won't be able to play more than one sound at
once, even with dmix, for sounds that output to /dev/dsp...
only works for sources that support alsa natively.

The reason it worked under KDE is because of arts, kde's
sound daemon.
