Gnome 2.4 Issues

Hi once again guys,

I am a little puzzled by something i took the time this evening to start over from scratch and install slackware 9.1 again this time using gnome 2.4 instead of taking the dropline gnome approach.

The strange thing is this my xf86config file is as follows;

Code:
   **********************************************************************
# Monitor section
# **********************************************************************

# Any number of monitor sections may be present

Section "Monitor"

    Identifier "My Monitor"

# HorizSync is in kHz unless units are specified.
# HorizSync may be a comma separated list of discrete values, or a
# comma separated list of ranges of values.
# NOTE: THE VALUES HERE ARE EXAMPLES ONLY. REFER TO YOUR MONITOR'S
# USER MANUAL FOR THE CORRECT NUMBERS.

    HorizSync 30-61

# HorizSync	30-64 # multisync
# HorizSync	31.5, 35.2 # multiple fixed sync frequencies
# HorizSync	15-25, 30-50 # multiple ranges of sync frequencies

# VertRefresh is in Hz unless units are specified.
# VertRefresh may be a comma separated list of discrete values, or a
# comma separated list of ranges of values.
# NOTE: THE VALUES HERE ARE EXAMPLES ONLY. REFER TO YOUR MONITOR'S
# USER MANUAL FOR THE CORRECT NUMBERS.

    VertRefresh 50-75

EndSection

# **********************************************************************
# Graphics device section
# **********************************************************************

# Any number of graphics device sections may be present

# Standard VGA Device:

Section "Device"
    Identifier	"Standard VGA"
    VendorName	"Unknown"
    BoardName	"Unknown"

# The chipset line is optional in most cases. It can be used to override
# the driver's chipset detection, and should not normally be specified.

# Chipset	"generic"

# The Driver line must be present. When using run-time loadable driver
# modules, this line instructs the server to load the specified driver
# module. Even when not using loadable driver modules, this line
# indicates which driver should interpret the information in this section.

    Driver "vga"
# The BusID line is used to specify which of possibly multiple devices
# this section is intended for. When this line isn't present, a device
# section can only match up with the primary video device. For PCI
# devices a line like the following could be used. This line should not
# normally be included unless there is more than one video device
# intalled.

# BusID "PCI:0:10:0"

# VideoRam	256

# Clocks	25.2 28.3

EndSection

# Device configured by xf86config:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "SiS 6326"
    Driver "sis"
    #VideoRam 8192
    # Option "no_accel" # Use this if acceleration is causing problems
    # Option "fifo_moderate"
    # Option "fifo_conserv"
    # Option "fifo_aggressive"
    # Option "fast_vram"
    # Option "pci_burst_on"
    # Option "xaa_benchmark" # DON'T use with "ext_eng_queue" !!!
    # Option "ext_eng_queue" # Turbo-queue. This can cause drawing
                             # errors, but gives some accel
    # Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
EndSection

# **********************************************************************
# Screen sections
# **********************************************************************

# Any number of screen sections may be present. Each describes
# the configuration of a single screen. A single specific screen section
# may be specified from the X server command line with the "-screen"
# option.
Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen 1"
    Device "SiS 6326"
    Monitor "My Monitor"
    DefaultDepth 24

    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 8
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
EndSection
Now i haven't changed the default setting in my /etc/inittab from 3 to 4 because with my current video mode not supported when trying to boot from the hard drive i assume i would have the same issue.

When i installed Dropline I didn't have this problem why is it happening now because in the previous slackware install i was having this issue because in my xf86config file the vertrefresh settings for my monitor wasn't there but now it is and i am having the same issue all over again . The only way i am able ot have access to gnome 2.4 is to use my boot disk and run startx.

Anyone got any suggestions?

The reason why i am asking is because i am trying to test out the new kernel i recompiled but if i am not able to access my kernels from the lilo boot screen i am stuck with using the old one seeing how i will be booting from the floppy to startx.

Is there someone here that can assistance with this issue please?

have you tried running something on the lines of xf86config xfree86config or one of those... that should take care of configuring X somewhat decently. Af for the kernels you're trying to boot, you'll need to edit /etc/lilo.conf and add them in there... might want to read the sticky by DaOne on kernel compiling
