Giving Slack a Go

I am really new to Linux. Ran Mandrake for a couple of days, uninstalled cause it seems to slooooow down and freeze. (Even on my pc. XP 1700+; 512 DDR Ram) Ran RH 9 for a week or so, got real fustrated with the fact that it was no matter what I did I could not install Nvidia drivers for my G3 TI 200, so I uninstalled that. The last straw was when I finally go it to start to install said something about my header files for the kernel, didn't have them.

So gonna give Slack a try. I downloaded the cd and would really like to try it on my laptop before running on my pc. Im a big Sierra Racing Fan. Both Nascar and GPL. So I need a windows partion. Anyways I have Mandrake 9.1 on my laptop now with a windows partion I tried to install and it didn't go very well, I ended up stopping it. Some thing about my cd rom, I'll have to run it again to find out. The laptop is a Dell Latitude 600c 750 Mhz and 128 ram.

I know this post leaves things wide open. I guess mainly what Im trying to ask is How do I install Slack and can I keep my windows partions and boot into windows when I want to race.

Thanks ahead of time

As long as you have two seperate linux partitions, one for the file sys. and one for swap and then your windows partition you'll be fine. WHen you install make sure you put the bootloader on the MBR, thats what I do anyways, and you'll have no problems.

If I were you, I would make some partions in windows, for linux, a boot, and a swap, then just setup slack using the drives you just made... that way you dont mess something up... because if youre not careful you will be reinstalling EVERYTHING...

doh, edit here...

/ or root partition
/swap
/boot
